Empowering  Wellness

About

My name is Emily Nelson

Welcome to my practice! As a passionate advocate for mental wellness, I believe everyone should embrace and love their brain, but that involves understanding it and taking the time to create a relationship with it. Using an integrative approach to therapy that combines Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), Compassion focused therapy (CFT) and narrative therapy, I help individuals, especially those from neurodivergent backgrounds, harness their unique strengths to lead fulfilling lives.

As a registered psychologist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) based in Brisbane, Australia, I have both a bachelors (+honours) and masters degree in psychology and have over five years of experience working with children, adolescents, and families across a range of settings including youth detention centres, drug and alcohol services, child protection system, and in private practice. This means I have worked with young people, parents and families across a range of presenting concerns including anxiety, stress, depression,  adjustment difficulties, social and relationship issues, schooling issues, anger and aggression, substance misuse, cognitive difficulties, developmental delays and neurodivergence.

Outside of my work as a psychologist, I enjoy running, reading, and spending quality time with my husband, children, and puppy.

My name is Lady Edith

Hi there! I’m the cheeky puppy who keeps my human company during online therapy sessions. While they work, I like to make my presence known by giving their feet a little lick or flashing my best puppy eyes for some extra treats. I’m not a fan of my dog bed—I prefer the comfy human chair where I can snuggle in and relax. Sometimes, you might even hear me snoring softly while my human chats away!

Our Services

If you're looking for assessment and diagnosis, we invite you to book an assessment intake session. During this session, we will provide a detailed explanation of the assessment process, ensuring you understand what to expect. Additionally, we will discuss the costs associated with report writing so you can make an informed decision.

If you are looking to engage in therapy for a person under the age of 11 years old please email us prior to booking your appointment. As our clinic is entirely virtual, some younger children are better suited to face to face models, we would rather discuss your child's needs and strengths before you commit and pay for a session that will not be effective.  This does not apply if you are wanting therapy for a parent with a child under 11 years of age.

  • The first step towards formal assessment, this session will focus on getting to know where you're at

FAQs

Do I need a referral to book an appointment?

A referral is not required to schedule an appointment. However, a referral may allow you to access a Medicare rebate and these can be obtained from your GP.

How do I get a MHCP?

You will need to book an appointment with your GP to discuss a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP). If you are deemed eligible, you may be entitled to Medicare rebates for up to 10 individual psychological appointments per calendar year (this includes Telehealth sessions).

What is the cost of a psychology appointment?

A standard consultation costs $250 (50 - 60 minute session).

With a valid MHCP, a Medicare rebate of $98.97 is available, resulting in an out-of-pocket expense of $151.03.

Please note there is currently no Medicare rebate for report writing hours associated with formal Assessments.

Please Note: Both the Australian Psychological Society (APS) and the Australian Association of Psychologists Inc (AAPi) provide a recommended schedule of fees for private psychology services. For the 2025-2026 period, the standard consultation fee for a 46 to 60-minute session is set between $318-$330.

Unbound Wellness charges less than both the APS and AAPi recommendation.

What is the cost of a full Autism / ADHD Assessment?

Both Autism and ADHD are neurodevelopmental disorders meaning that difference in functioning and cognition begin in development. The gold standard diagnostic practices includes:

- Developmental interviews, with client and a caregiver (adults wanting a diagnosis will need someone who knew them well as a child, preferably a parent to be involved) .

- Online questionnaires for the client, a caregiver (or close family member for an adult) and teachers (for children)

- Standardized interviews that look for specific symptomology

- Report writing ( billed at $220 an hour)

Depending on the complexity of the presentation, completed reports for the assessment of ADHD (including all sessions and report writing), tend to sit between $1820 - $2500. Completed reports for the assessment of Autism spectrum Disorder (including all sessions and report writing) tend to sit between $2000 - $3000. These are only average costs.  During your intake session, Emily will collaborate with the client to create a personalised quote so the entire assessment cost is understood upfront.

Unbound Wellness does not offer payment plans, and reports will only be written when payment is received in full.

Do you accept private health?

Yes you can receive a private health rebates, the amount will vary depending on your coverage. You will receive an invoice after your session which you can take to your private health fund and if eligible you may receive a rebate.

What do I need to prepare for my Telehealth appointment?

Currently, all services through Unbound Wellness are online, so you will need a secure internet connection and a device (i.e. phone or laptop) which allows for video teleconferencing. We also encourage you to arrange a private and quiet space to be during the appointment. Please note that if your appointment is for a neurodevelopmental interview, you will need a care giver or close family to be present, or to also have access to a device, to give insight into the clients functioning.

An email reminder will be sent 48 hours prior to your scheduled appointment and this will contain a link to access your Telehealth appointment.

We have chosen a very secure teleconferencing system to ensure that we cannot be accessed by anybody in without a link. However, like any system on the internet, there may be some risk included, we will discuss this in our intake session.

What do I do if I am no longer able to attend an appointment?

We kindly ask for you to notify us at least 24 hours in advance if you are no longer able to attend your appointment. We understand that sometimes unexpected things happen, but please note that if you are unable to provide 24 hours’ notice, you will not be eligible for a refund. This cancellation policy is in place so we have adequate time to allow another client to take this appointment where required.
